Training Awarded NCTJ Accreditation

Sportsbeat/News Associates' full and part-time newspaper journalism training courses have been formally accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) - the UK's number one recognised journalism training authority.

The decision of the NCTJ's board followed successful accreditation visits in December and March, during which staff were complemented on their preparations and lecturer appointments.

"We are proud and delighted to be part of the NCTJ family," said Richard Parsons, Head of Journalism Training.

"As a newspaper editor the NCTJ certificate was the only qualification that mattered to me and the same rule applies on our newsdesk here.

"We now look forward to playing an active role within the organisation to ensure the industry produces the best young journalists to meet the ever-changing demands of news outlets like ourselves."

Meanwhile, Sportsbeat/News Associates' joint training venture with St Mary's College, Twickenham, has been awarded a top teaching prize.

The one-semester course for third year BA (Hons) media arts students was devised by Sportsbeat staff and St Mary's Academic Director Dr Daragh Minogue.

It was awarded the prestigious Henry Walpole prize for education excellence and was praised by judges for demonstrating a 'creative and inventive way of teaching'.
